The Advanced Clinical Cardiology Fellowship provides experience in the overall care of cardiac patients, including the use of specific cardiac treatment modalities and the integration of cardiac treatment with the treatment of co-existing not cardiac conditions.  During the fellowship, trainees will gain experience in the state of the art care of CHF, Acute Coronary Syndromes, Valvular Heart Disease and Arrhythmias, and the integration of this care with treatment of co-existing non cardiac conditions in consultation with consultants in relevant areas.  Fellows will also gain practical experience in the practice of medicine in a Canadian context.  This will include the practical delivery of medical care, dealing with the issues that affect length of stay, the planning of long-term care and working with social agencies and community services to optimize long-term outcomes.

What We Offer You

The University of Ottawa Heart Institute (UOHI) is one of the largest cardiovascular institutions in Canada. The UOHI provides the full spectrum of advanced cardiovascular care with annual volumes of > 1,400 open-heart surgical procedures, > 8,000 catheterizations/PCIs, > 600 EP ablations and > 900 EP devices. The UOHI has active programs in advanced cardiac care including: cardiac transplantation, LVAD, TAVI, MV clip, percutaneous paravalvular regurgitation closures, LAA occlusion, ethanol septal ablation, complex EP ablation and adult congenital heart intervention. The UOHI Echocardiography Laboratory is one of the largest and most active cardiovascular ultrasound units in Canada.  Annual volumes include > 16,000 TTEs, > 900 TEEs (not including intra-operative) and > 600 stress echocardiograms (exercise and pharmacological). Routine 3D and contrast imaging has been integrated into daily clinical care. The laboratory has 11 rooms dedicated for ultrasound imaging, 13 echo systems and 15 sonographers on staff. The laboratory was fully digitized in 2004 and has had ongoing accreditation with the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC) since 2008. The laboratory has been also accredited by the CCN (Ontario Cardiovascular Care Network) since 2015. The UOHI echocardiography is staffed by 7 full-time academic, Level III echocardiographers (including two clinician scientists) covering a range of sub-speciality expertise. The UOHI echocardiography laboratory provides 24/7 on-call services.

The UOHI echocardiography laboratory has had a very successful adult echocardiography Fellowship Program since 1988, which has attracted numerous national and international trainees. In 2014, the laboratory was the first site in the country to receive formal accreditation by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada to provide training in order to be eligible for the area of focus (AFC) echocardiography sub-specialty diploma. The Fellowship provides an extensive and structured academic curriculum, delivered on a weekly basis. During their training, Fellows are exposed to a large volume and range of clinical cases and are involved in multiple scholar activities. All clinical and research activities are centred at the UOHI.

Three fully funded positions are usually available. Training duration is a minimum of 12 months, but can extend to 24 months. Typically, training starts July 1.

What We Offer You

The University of Ottawa Heart Institute is a dedicated cardiac centre with a unique Cardiac Imaging Program.

Trainees will have access to dedicated Cardiac CT, MRI, PET and Nuclear Cardiology equipment and staff. Our high volumes provide ample clinical exposure. Trainees learn under the guidance of world leaders and internationally recognized experts in Cardiac Imaging.

During the fellowship, the trainees will obtain expertise in cardiac imaging. Our core curriculum lecture series teaches the fundamentals of Cardiac Imaging. Although there is strong emphasis on clinical competence and excellence, trainees also acquire research skills that are relevant to cardiac imaging.

What We Offer You

This is a 1-2 year fellowship dedicated to the management of patients with advanced heart failure including cardiac transplantation and advanced mechanical support (left ventricular assist devices). Fellows will learn how to manage these patients both acutely in the in-patient setting and chronically in out-patient clinics.

Fellows are responsible for rounding on the heart failure service and attending clinics. There will be a small component of on-call work (1 weekend/month).

What We Offer You

Interventional Cardiology is a medical Area of Focused Competence (AFC-diploma) of adult Cardiology devoted to advancing patient care through the innovative integration of clinical, imaging-based diagnosis and minimally invasive therapy of cardiovascular diseases. More specifically, the discipline relates to the application of cardiac imaging modalities and hemodynamics to perform minimally invasive treatments, which often have less morbidity and mortality than existing treatment options. 

The core fellowship program involves coronary artery imaging, functional evaluation and revascularization of coronary stenotic vessels.  Key components include interventional management of patients with stable coronary disease, acute coronary syndromes (including cardiogenic shock and patients post cardiac arrest).

 There is also an emphasis on training fellows in the ambulatory outpatient management of patients before and after percutaneous intervention.  The program also provides exposure to percutaneous management of structural heart disease and an enhanced second year specializing in structural interventions.

What We Offer You

The Adult Critical Care Medicine Fellowship program offers a two year Fellowship program with training opportunities at multiple sites in the region; Intensive Care Units at The Ottawa Hospital – Civic and General Campuses, Cardiac Surgical Intensive Care Unit at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute and Community ICU sites at the Queensway Carleton Hospital and Montfort Hospital.

What We Offer You

The Division of Dermatology, University of Ottawa and Laserderm offers a 1 year training program in laser surgery for dermatologists certified by the Royal College, the American Board, or international medical graduates who obtain equivalency from the Royal College of Canada.

Dr. Laughlin played a lead role in developing treatment protocols for several laser manufacturers on how to best use their systems in most of the procedures you may need.

The fellow will act as a consultant in cutaneous laser surgery and medicine, and will supervise medical and non-medical personnel in the operation of a laser facility that meets the required provincial or national standards.

What We Offer You

Trainees have the option between a 1 year clinical fellowship to consolidate their expertise in bariatric medicine or a 2-3 year clinical investigator fellowship in bariatric medicine.  Clinical investigator fellows enroll in a Master’s Program in the Department of Epidemiology or a basic science department at the University of Ottawa.  

Trainees will spend time at two locations: 1. The Ottawa Hospital Weight Management Clinic, tertiary care site that is a Bariatric Centre of Excellence and 2. LEAF Weight Management Clinic, a community-based academic site.  Trainees will learn about the medical and surgical management of obesity and work closely with allied health. In addition, rotations with the pediatric bariatric program, eating disorder clinic, sleep disorder clinic, and preoperative care clinic will be arranged.

All trainees are encouraged to pursue a research topic in bariatrics. Research interests include database development, program development, cohort studies, genotype-phenotype associations, genomics and physiology of weight loss resistance, pulmonary function, adipose tissue cellular remodeling, psychotropic agents, smoking, health care utilization.

The fellowships are structured such that in addition to clinical practice, trainees will prepare and pursue other learning opportunities (self-directed learning, monthly journal club and research training such as Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) research education workshops). All North American trainees will write the American Board of Obesity Medicine exams that are held in December. Regular teaching sessions will be held in preparation for the exam.

What We Offer You

The Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism Fellowship in Thyroid and Thyroid Cancer offers a customizable program depending on your interest.  A University of Ottawa Certificate of Completion is provided upon successful completion of the fellowship training.

We have a dedicated thyroid cancer clinic as well as regular thyroid nodule clinics where ultrasound is used for performing fine needle aspiration biopsies.

We encourage trainees to be involved in a quality improvement project and a research project that may involve a systematic review and to write a case report. Fellows are encouraged to attend at least one meeting such as the American Thyroid Association Meeting and to submit an abstract at that meeting. Fellows usually attend 1-2 clinics per week depending on their research component. Fellows are expected to attend our academic rounds including the monthly multidisciplinary rounds with nuclear medicine, diagnostic imaging, thyroid surgeons. As well we have quarterly pediatric thyroid multidisciplinary rounds and a Cancer Care Ontario supported Community of Practice that meets quarterly in regard to the topic of thyroid nodule and thyroid cancer.

 The Ottawa Hospital Inflammatory Bowel Disease Clinic was developed to enhance the care of the IBD patient through a collaborative working environment involving gastroenterologists, colorectal surgeons, and nutrition services.The IBD Fellowship enhances the academic goals of the department by providing an environment conducive to clinical research and ongoing staff, resident, and student education. The attributes of the fellowship are further enhanced by bimonthly multidisciplinary IBD rounds and Journal Club.

The third year fellowship allows trainees to see new IBD cases, see those sent for second opinions, follow patients through exacerbations and remissions, evaluate the effects of treatment decisions, and form long term physician – patient relationships. Furthermore, the fellow will become expert in managing urgent and complicated IBD cases.

The general objectives of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Program is to develop knowledge of all aspects of IBD, including relevant basic sciences. This includes the genetics, patho-physiology and treatment of IBD. The program emphasizes IBD research. This is a critical component on the Fellowship year.  The expectation is for the trainee to complete a clinical or translational research project to present at a national/international meeting with later submission to a peer review journal. The resident will master consultancy, research and teaching skills as they relate to IBD.

The fellowship is a clinical / clinical research fellowship in either malignant hematology, combined malignant hematology and hematopoietic cell transplantation, or hematopoietic cell transplantation.

The fellowship training is tailored to the interests and needs of the trainee.  Each fellowship year has specific objectives based on the trainees’ goals and the skills / knowledge needed to function as a subspecialist in malignant hematology +/- HCT.

Research is an important part of training and at minimum, fellows must complete a clinical project including meeting abstract submission and manuscript preparation.  For those with a stronger research interest the fellowship can include completing a Masters or extended laboratory experience depending on the trainee.

The University fellowship is the only program in Canada performing transplants for autoimmune diseases.

What We Offer You

The Thrombosis Fellowship Program is well established and has been training fellows for over a decade.  Three fellowship streams are offered: a 1-year Clinical Fellowship to consolidate expertise in thrombosis; a 2-3 year combined clinical and research fellowship for those interested in becoming a clinician investigator in thrombosis; and a 2-3 year clinical and education fellowship for those interested in becoming a clinician educator in thrombosis.

The Ottawa Hospital Thrombosis Program provides an ideal training environment and offers an active thrombosis clinical service, specialized thrombosis faculty and a highly successful research program.

The Thrombosis Fellowship program provides the opportunity to learn from respected world leaders in venous thromboembolism research, diagnosis and management.  Faculty members have developed niche areas of expertise including thrombosis and cancer; thrombosis and pregnancy; diagnosis of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism; management of thrombosis; genetic aspects of thrombosis and thrombosis education.

Investigators with the thrombosis program have established successful research collaborations both within Canada and throughout the world.  At present, 7 multicentre clinical studies are being coordinated out of Ottawa.

Additional learning opportunities for Thrombosis Fellows include weekly Thrombosis Rounds, Blood Club and Journal Club. Fellows pursuing the Clinical and Research Fellowship stream also enroll in the Masters of Clinical Epidemiology Program at the University of Ottawa where they receive formal research training. Fellows pursuing the Clinical and Education Fellowship stream enroll in a formal post-graduate training program related to education.

The fellows are expected to do in-patient service and clinics under supervision (25% of time for research and education fellows; 50% for clinical fellows).  The expectation is that at the end of training the candidate will be able to perform as an expert thrombosis consultant. Fellows also perform call with the back-up of a staff hematologist (currently one in four to one in six weeknights and one in four to one in six weekends) during the fellowship.

Thrombosis Fellows present a topic once monthly at Thrombosis Rounds.

Applications are encouraged from MDs who have completed/will complete General Internal Medicine, Respirology and/or Hematology training.  Foreign medical graduates with equivalent qualifications are eligible to apply.

The Division of Infectious Diseases, University of Ottawa, offers a one-year fellowship in Antimicrobial Stewardship. Building on the fundamental knowledge gained during subspecialty infectious diseases training, this fellowship provides theoretical and practical experience that will allow you to implement and manage a hospital-based antimicrobial stewardship program.  

You will work most closely with the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program (ASP) team (two ASP physicians, and dedicated ASP pharmacists). Regular interaction occurs with infectious diseases faculty and trainees, pharmacists, clinical teams, and infection prevention and control and quality department members. Opportunity exists to collaborate with local and regional partners, such as Public Health Ontario.

The 12-month program includes 8 weeks of clinical inpatient consultation service as attending ID staff, split between both inpatient campuses, with some overnight and weekend call.  Involvement in education (e.g. of medical students, residents, pharmacists) and ASP quality improvement project(s), and completion of a relevant research project, are also expected. We also provide the opportunity to gain added experience in leadership, quality improvement, epidemiology and statistics, and antimicrobial stewardship in pediatrics.

What We Offer You

The University of Ottawa Clinical Fellowship in Critical Care Nephrology is a one-year program designed to provide advanced training in the medical management of patients with acute kidney injury (AKI) and other aspects of critical care nephrology. This includes a focus on developing clinical and technical expertise related to the various renal replacement therapy (RRT) modalities used in the intensive care unit (ICU) setting (including intermittent hemodialysis (IHD), slow low-efficiency dialysis (SLED) and continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT).

Fellows will gain experience in a large and diverse program working with faculty who have expertise in medical education, clinical research, vascular access and technical support of IHD, SLED and CRRT.  In addition to clinical training, Critical Care Nephrology fellows will be expected to participate in scholarly activities, including a research project (which may involve clinical or basic science research or quality assurance/improvement), related to critical care nephrology.

What We Offer You

What We Offer You

The  University  of  Ottawa  Home  Dialysis  Fellowship  has  been  designed  to  meet  the  criteria  of  all  its stakeholders.  Most important among these is the prospective fellow, the Nephrology Partners of Ottawa (funding source).

The Home Dialysis program at The Ottawa Hospital is one of largest in the country and is comprised of patients on both home peritoneal dialysis and home hemodialysis.  The Ottawa Hospital is one of the few centers in the world with an embedded PD catheter program.

You will also have the opportunity to participate in one of our home dialysis research projects and present this at an international meeting.

What We Offer You

The goal of this program is to provide advanced training in electroencephalography. This is meant to lead to the successful challenge of the Canadian Society for Clinical Neurophysiology (CSCN) EEG examination within the fellowship’s calendar year. The graduate should be able to read and interpret electroencephalograms independently. This performance should be at the very highest of levels. The graduate will be expected to recognize normal and abnormal patterns, as well as normal variants, epileptiform variants, seizures, and more subtly dissect rhythmic and periodic patterns in critically ill patients.

Video electroencephalography training will also be provided to the trainee but the graduate will not be expected to be proficient in this modality of EEG upon completion of the program.

We offer a flexible EEG reading schedule for physician trainees who have clinical practices running during their fellowship training period. Our dedicated staff will provide a rich learning environment and enable the graduate to successfully challenge the CSCN national EEG examination. Didactic sessions will also be offered in anticipation of the examination to review the basic science and technological aspects of electroencephalography.

• Prerequisite(s): We will accept applications from FRCPC trained neurologists as well as foreign trained practicing neurologists who wish to obtain training in this discipline.
• Estimated % clinical workload: The trainee will be expected to read electroencephalograms (EEG) on a full time basis. Extra flexibility is possible within the program if the physician trainee has a busy clinical practice, in which case provisions are made to draft a schedule whereby 30-40 EEGs are read and interpreted on a weekly basis.

What We Offer You

The main objective of this fellowship is to provide a fellow with the skills to care for individuals with both newly diagnosed and later stages of Parkinson’s as well as other movement disorders.

As a fellow, they will be seeing patients in the Parkinson and Movement Disorders clinic four days a week.  Trainees will be exposed to patients with a wide variety of movement disorders and their treatment that includes the extensive use of botulinum toxin.  The clinic has an active deep brain stimulation program as well as duodopa infusion  program.   Fellows will have the opportunity to work with Dr. Grimes, Dr. Mestre, Dr. Barrett and Dr Schlossmacher to obtain a different perspective on the care of these patients.

Fellows can be involved in our clinical trial program where they will learn the various rating scales used in movement disorder clinical research and about new therapies in development. There are opportunities for both pre-clinical and clinical research and fellows are encouraged to purse a research project.

What We Offer You

This fellowship offers the training to improve basic knowledge of the disease course and mechanisms in Multiple Sclerosis. Trainees will learn to properly diagnose Multiple Sclerosis and differentiate it from mimicking disorders, along with gaining expertise in the management of patients with Multiple Sclerosis.

Fellows will begin to understand clinical trial design and results from studies of Multiple Sclerosis treatments while gaining expertise in running clinical trials. They themselves will successfully design and conduct a basic science or clinical research project in MS.

What We Offer You

The University of Ottawa Neuromuscular Fellowship is a 1-2 year program emphasizing clinical bedside and clinical research experience studying neuromuscular disorders (NMDs). The primary NMD fellowship site is based at the Ottawa Hospital, Civic Campus, in Ottawa, Canada. The Ottawa Hospital strives to provide compassionate and evidenced-based care, with an emphasis on tertiary-level and specialty care for patients in Eastern Ontario. The NMD Fellow may also attend NMD clinics at the General Campus, as well as the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (neuromuscular or neurogenetics clinics).

The TOH NMD Fellow will be exposed to outpatient, inpatient and emergency management of neuromuscular disorders. NMD teaching will take place through didactic sessions scheduled throughout the year, neuromuscular clinics, journal clubs, clinical and bench research, extensive electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction study (NCS) clinics, and inpatient/emergency consultations.

What We Offer You

We offer clinical and research fellowships to highly trained candidates from Canada and around the world. As a member of the OSP, you will work alongside stroke and general neurologists, residents, nurses, research professionals and the allied health team.

Our fellows become active participants in the all aspects of the management of neurovascular disease, including prevention, acute treatment, in-patient care, and recovery.   You will gain expertise in the design and conduct of research studies, with a focus on the assessment of patients for clinical trial enrollment.

Your fellowship will be centered around the Stroke Prevention Clinic and the in-patient Neurovascular Unit. However, your experience can be tailored to maximize clinical or research exposure, or to gain specific skills such as neurosonography.

What We Offer You

The Nuclear Medicine Fellowship Program is designed to provide a well-rounded training environment, encompassing general nuclear medicine, PET/CT, nuclear cardiology and radionuclide therapy with I-131 sodium iodine and Radium 223. 

The Division of Nuclear Medicine at the Ottawa Hospital has eight board certified physicians, and provides secondary and tertiary service to Ottawa and the surrounding regions. The service performs approximately 30,000 diagnostic and therapeutic studies per year, across 2 practice sites including more than 2,000 FDG PET-CT scans. The service has state-of-the-art PET-CT (GE Discovery 64 slice CT), SPECT/CT (3), SPECT (5) and bone densitometry systems (2).  We read studies at the affiliated Ottawa Heart Institute on dedicated cardiac equipment including a dedicated solid state SPECT camera (1), SPECT/CT cameras, and 2 recent-vintage PET-CT scanners.

Learning opportunities for fellows include weekly Interesting Case Rounds, monthly Journal Club and weekly didactic lectures on clinical nuclear medicine, physics and radiopharmaceuticals, offered to both nuclear medicine residents and fellows.  Our fellowship is offered in parallel with the 5-year University of Ottawa Nuclear Medicine Residency.

The fellows are expected to rotate in the clinic under close supervision, with graded responsibilities as their expertise and knowledgebase develops.   They are also expected to present at interdisciplinary rounds under the guidance of a staff member. Fellows are required to present annually at the City Wide Nuclear Medicine Grand Rounds and at the Divisional Journal Club.

Depending on the interest and time availability, it is expected that fellows will engage in at least one research project per annum.

What We Offer You

Our training program addresses the management of physical symptoms and psychosocial, spiritual, and ethical dimensions of care for persons with advanced life-threatening illness.

Trainees participate in research and educational activities with faculty and complete a scholarly project. The curriculum of the Palliative Medicine Fellowship mirrors that of the Palliative Medicine Residency Program.  However, the Fellowship exists to allow access to training for candidates that do not have FRCPSC or CCFP designation.

Fellows will experience a broad range of exposure to patients with malignant and non-malignant illness. Experience is gained from one of the largest palliative care units in Canada with an internationally recognized faculty.  Primary teaching sites include The Ottawa Hospital and Bruyère Continuing Care. The program excels in interprofessional collaboration and integration of palliative care with medical, oncologic, surgical, and primary care services across the Ottawa region.

The qualified Neuro-Respiratory Fellow will be a highly motivated learner and clinician. The fellowship will be undertaken at the Ottawa Hospital Rehabilitation Centre and the Ottawa Hospital, under the direct guidance and supervision of Dr. Douglas McKim, Medical Director (co-chair of the first Canadian Guidelines on Home Mechanical Ventilation).

Fellows are involved in the assessment and care of patients enrolled in the Respiratory Rehabilitation Program as well as patients with neuromuscular diseases (NMD), both in the outpatient clinics and within the hospital.

With one-on-one supervision, fellows will learn to investigate and recognize signs of inadequate cough capacity, aspiration risk, and ventilatory insufficiency.

What We Offer You

Our program offers multidisciplinary exposure to all of aspects of sleep medicine and Circadian rhythm disorders with special focus on laboratory aspects. All fellows attend general sleep clinics, as well as clinics in psychiatry, neurology and pediatric sleep medicine. Fellows attend general sleep clinics at the university hospital as well as independent health facilities in urban and rural settings.

In the laboratory, fellows will learn the technical aspects of data acquisition, data scoring, and study interpretation for nocturnal baseline and therapeutic polysomnograms as well as MSLT/MWT testing, portable monitoring and actigraphy. Teaching is based on AASM criteria as well as CPSO Ontario standards.

Candidates are examined internally during and at the end of the program and are encouraged to write the European Sleep medicine examinations. Many of our fellows focus on clinical training. However, if the candidate wishes to pursue a research pathway, there are opportunities for collaboration with the Centre for Practice Changing Research.
