Clinical Highlights

The Division of Neurology at the Ottawa Department of Medicine has maintained the highest standing in general clinical neurology consultation service in addition to offering a full complement of subspecialty clinics : Stroke, Parkinson’s and Movement Disorders, Multiple Sclerosis, Neuromuscular Diseases, Epilepsy, Memory Disorders.

There are affiliated clinical neurophysiology laboratories (EEG, EMG, EP, intensive monitoring) as well as Neurovascular Doppler. We have strong links with well integrated Neuroradiology, Neurosurgery, Neuro-ophthalmology and Neuropsychology divisions. Patients are admitted to the clinical teaching unit, where a strong multidisciplinary care plan has been developed, or to a state of the art Neuro-Observation area.  The Division has shown a strong dedication to neurology education, having tripled the size of its fully accredited residency program in the past decade, thanks to excellent levels of resident satisfaction and success at national exams.Three areas of clinical and research focus has been identified: Stroke, Parkinson’s disease and Multiple Sclerosis. A team of six dedicated full-time geographic neurologists specializes in stroke, with close links with the Centre for Stroke Recovery and Canadian Stroke Network.  Our clinicians have championed several successful initiatives in rapid TIA assessment, telestroke, stroke prevention, design of new neuroimaging techniques, as well as facilitating efficient and rapid access to intravenous and intra-arterial tPA.  The Parkinson’s Clinic has close links with a successful research group at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute and the International Parkinson’s Study Group.  This clinic provides not only best practice comprehensive care to Parkinson’s patients, but also offers trials of novel agents and has close links with the community.  The Multiple Sclerosis clinic is an integrated multidisciplinary point of care for a large MS population, and is extremely active in trials of new agents. Our MS research group has been very productive in neuroimmunology and in close association with hematology, has championed a large scale bone marrow transplantation clinical trial in refractory MS.
