Position Overview:

The Program Director is responsible for the overall conduct, organization and accountability of the Division of Dermatology Residency Program.  The Program Director is accountable to the Chair of the Department of Medicine (DOM) and the Vice Dean of the Postgraduate Medical Education Office. The overall mandate of the Program Director is to ensure that residents receive the best possible training and education and that the standards of the accrediting colleges are maintained.

 

Skills Required:

-          Certified dermatologist with strong administrative skills and experience

-          Possess strong leadership ability and demonstrated ability to act as a role model

-          Demonstrates strong communication and interpersonal skills

-          Be eligible for an academic appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor or above

-          Holds certification(s) in dermatology from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada [RCPSC]

-          Demonstrated knowledge of, and adherence to, policies and procedures including accreditation standards and adherence to maintaining currency on accreditation changes.

-          Established commitment to continuous learning.

-          Experienced, or willing to undertake training in the first 6 months, in negotiation and problem resolution.

-          Have taken training, or willing to undertake training in the first year, in crucial conversations

-          Have taken, or willing to undertake training in the first 18 months, the RCPSC course for new program directors

 

The job duties for this role include but are not limited to:

Program

-          Chairs the programs’ Residency Program Committee, and directs the program such that it meets the general and specific standards of accreditation. This includes the selection and scheduling of rotations, curriculum, other educational activities and events and educational sites.

-          Oversees and participates in the development, implementation and review of the educational plan for the Residency Program.

-          Acts as a liaison between PGME Office and the DOM, and communicates pertinent information effectively.

-          Participates in and upholds the CaRMS process with professionalism and ethical decision making.

-          Attends the Program Directors Meetings and participates in initiatives led by the DOM Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) Director and the Vice Chair of Education

-          Responsible for the supervision of a team of administrative support staff, physician leads and directors, providing guidance and feedback as necessary

-          Actively participates in program reviews, preparing documentation as required

-          Ensures compliance with PARO contract

Residents

-          Participates in the admissions process and selection of candidates and conducts regular reviews regarding individual performance, making recommendations for promotion when appropriate.

-          Provides counseling services to residents and responds to their difficulties such as those related to stress, their wellbeing and learning challenges

-           Provides and maintains an appeal mechanism that upholds fairness in procedure, reasonable decision-making and transparency within the program

-          Ensures In-Training Evaluation Reports (ITERS) are completed and submitted as required
